It doesn’t matter if you’re conducting a PlasmaPen treatment for fine lines and wrinkles, acne scarring, or sun damage; aftercare is essential. Knowing how to care for skin as it heals ensures that your clients recover as quickly as possible and achieve optimal results.

In this comprehensive guide, we cover the ins and outs of aftercare for PlasmaPen across all our industry-leading devices, including the classic PlasmaPen, CoolJet™, and the Fusion device range, with specific instructions tailored to hot, warm, cold, and ozone modalities.

Why is Aftercare so Important?

A lot of people focus on the treatment side of PlasmaPen, forgetting that aftercare is just as important. Following a PlasmaPen treatment, proper aftercare ensures optimum results and minimises any potential side effects.

Proper post-procedure care promotes rapid healing by reducing inflammation and preventing infection, both of which are key to achieving smooth, firm skin. It also minimises discomfort and significantly reduces the risk of complications such as post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation or scarring. By protecting your skin during its most vulnerable phase, you preserve your investment, enhance immediate results, and help keep skin looking vibrant and youthful for as long as possible.

PlasmaPen Aftercare

Traditional warm plasma treatments with the classic PlasmaPen create micro-traumas on the surface of the skin (often appearing as tiny carbon dots or crusts). Following these core recovery steps is vital to ensure optimal healing:

Immediate Post-Care (24-48 Hours Post-Treatment)

• Managing swelling and redness: It is entirely normal for the treated area to swell or feel warm, similar to a mild sunburn, for the first 24 to 48 hours. To soothe the skin, apply a clean, cold compress or ice pack for five minutes every hour. Gently apply PlasmaPen Advance Repair Healing Lotion or EXO Serum twice daily to cool the skin and alleviate discomfort.
• Keep the skin dry: Avoid getting the treatment area wet for the first 48 hours. Do not wash your face, swim, or apply regular skincare products and cosmetics. If necessary, gently dab the area using a sterile gauze cloth dampened with cool, boiled water, then pat dry.
• Avoid wearing makeup: Refrain from applying makeup for at least the first 4 days. Applying cosmetics to open or micro-damaged skin can cause severe irritation or infection
• Avoid sun exposure, heat, sweating and swimming: You must avoid sun exposure to the treated areas for the first 48 hours following Plasma Pen treatment. Stay away from saunas, hot tubs, steam rooms, Jacuzzis, and heavy physical exercise until all redness and discomfort have completely subsided. Sweat contains salts and bacteria that irritate healing skin.
• Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water throughout your recovery to keep your skin supple, elastic, and supported from within.

Carbon Crust Phase (3-7 Days Post-Treatment)

• • Do not pick crusts and scabs: Small carbon dots/crusts will form across the treatment grid. Allow them to shed naturally to prevent scarring and hyperpigmentation. If healing takes longer than expected or feels excessively irritated, you may recommend a small amount of antibiotic cream.
  • Apply recommended products: Continue applying PlasmaPen Silver Colloidal Gel alongside PlasmaPen Advanced Repair Lotion morning and night to maintain a protective, hydrating barrier.
  • Apply sun protection: After three days, start applying sun cream with SPF 50 or higher and Plasma Pen Tinted Aftercare with SPF50 every day to treated areas that may be exposed to the sun. Do this for four to six weeks post-treatment.
• Apply minimal makeup: From day five, clients can start to wear minimal makeup. If they do need to cover up, only the Plasma Pen Tinted Aftercare with SPF50 is recommended, as this has been proven to be both safe and effective, and it won’t irritate your skin.

New Skin Phase (8-14+ Days Post-Treatment)

• Resume cosmetic routine: Unless advised otherwise, from days 8 to 10, clients may resume their standard skincare and makeup routines, as the carbon crusts will have naturally flaked away to reveal fresh, new skin. 
• Long-term hydration and sun protection: Keep the new skin thoroughly hydrated and protected from direct sunlight. The treated area may remain slightly pink and tender for 2 to 4 weeks, but skin texture and tightness will continuously improve, reaching full results around Week 8.

Fusion devices adapt to various clinical protocols, meaning your aftercare will depend directly on the modality used during the session.

Fusion Argon Warm Plasma Aftercare

The Fusion Argon Warm Plasma setting delivers targeted thermal energy to contract tissue and stimulate collagen synthesis. As this modality creates micro-thermal zones on the skin, aftercare closely aligns with standard warm plasma principles.

• Follow the full PlasmaPen aftercare protocol detailed above: Maintain dry healing for the first 48 hours, apply PlasmaPen Silver Colloidal Gel and Advanced Repair Serum twice daily, never pick scabs, and refrain from applying standard makeup until Day 5.
• Protect the skin: Protect the healing carbon dots, refrain from picking, and apply SPF 50+ broad-spectrum sunscreen daily once the skin surface has closed. Avoid heat treatments, saunas, and strenuous workouts until crusts have shed completely.

Fusion Ozone Plasma Aftercare

Fusion Ozone Plasma treatments focus on sterilising the skin surface, eliminating acne-causing bacteria, and reducing local inflammation. Following an ozone plasma session, aftercare centres on soothing the skin and maintaining absolute cleanliness.

• Avoid harsh skincare products: Refrain from using harsh topical acne active ingredients (such as high-strength benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid) for 24 to 48 hours post-treatment to avoid over-stimulating the skin.

Fusion Cold Atmospheric Plasma Aftercare
